Housing developers have broken ground on their site at Cross Road, Deal. As part of the development of 100 homes, councillors agreed a 30% affordable housing allocation, to help a wide range of people to access the property market in our district.
Very recently developers, Abbey Developments Ltd, have applied to Dover District Council (DDC) to remove that condition and deliver no affordable homes after a fresh viability assessment.
Labour leaders at DDC, Cllr Kevin Mills and Cllr Jamie Pout said
“We are hugely disappointed to hear that Abbey Development Ltd now want to renege on their promise to deliver 30 affordable homes for local people in Deal. Robbing young families, teachers, nurses and other ambitious people from climbing the property ladder or renting a home is simply not something we can support.
We strongly urge Abbey Development Ltd to rethink their plan to take these homes away from a community that is desperate for affordable housing – this is not the behaviour we expect from a reputable developer.
If they cannot afford to build homes, they are welcome to return the site to a green field”
The new application has already received numerous objections from local residents. It is likely that this variation to condition will go to a full planning committee of district councillors some time later this year.
